The Aegean Maritime Museum was founded by the Mykonian George M. Dracopoulos and his spouse Ioanna. Housed in a traditional Cycladic 19th century building in the old town of Myconos, at the Tria Pigadia location, it has been in continuous operation since 1985. The mission of the Museum is the research and promotion of the maritime history of the Greeks and their engagement with the sea, from antiquity to the present day. The Museum’s interior space has been suitably designed to display maritime artifacts such as ship models, historical shipping documents, engravings, maps, ancient artifacts as well as a collection of rare, ancient coins with nautical depictions.
The Museum’s books are preserved at the ELIA – Hellenic Literary and Historical Archive which is part of M.I.E.T – National Bank of Greece Cultural Foundation, in Athens. At the Museum’s outdoor space, you can admire the original mechanism of the “Armenistis” lighthouse, marble gravestones, nautical instruments and marine crafting tools.
The Aegean Maritime Museum has rescued and restored to their original appearance and form “Evangelistria”, a commercial perama type sailboat, and “Thalis o Milisios”, a cable steamship. In addition, with the founders’ initiative and persistent efforts, the island of Delos was supplied with electrical power.
The Aegean Maritime Museum is a private institution and is financially supported by the family of the founders.
